About the RICA

RICA PASSING REQUIREMENTS

RICA Written Examination
The RICA Written Examination includes 70 multiple-choice questions, some of which are field-test questions that do not count toward a candidate’s score. A candidate can earn a maximum of 60 scaled points on the multiple-choice section. On the constructed-response section, a candidate can earn a maximum of 60 scaled points: 36 points on the four focused educational problems and instructional tasks and 24 points on the case study. The maximum total scaled score on the examination, therefore, is 120 points.

The minimum passing scaled score on the RICA Written Examination is 81 points. This minimum passing score was established by the CTC based on recommendations from California teachers and teacher educators. A candidate who earns a total score of 81 points or higher passes the Written Examination. A passing score must be achieved at a single administration of the Written Examination; performance on parts of the examination cannot be combined across test administrations.

RICA Video Performance Assessment
A candidate’s score on the RICA Video Performance Assessment is determined by the scores on three Video Packets. The score on each Video Packet can range from 2 to 8. A candidate’s total score is the sum of the three Video Packet scores, so it can range from 6 to 24.

The minimum passing score on the RICA Video Performance Assessment is 17 points. This minimum passing score was established by the CTC based on recommendations from California teachers and teacher educators. A passing score must be achieved on three Video Packets submitted for a single submission deadline; Video Packet scores cannot be combined across different submission deadlines to produce a passing score.

Retaking the RICA

The RICA may be taken as often as necessary until a passing score is achieved on either the RICA Written Examination or the RICA Video Performance Assessment. If you attempt the Written Examination or the Video Performance Assessment and do not pass, you may either retake the assessment that you did not pass or take the other assessment. There is no limit to the number of times you may take either assessment; however, each time you wish to retake the RICA you must reregister.
