RICA PASSING REQUIREMENTS

To pass the RICA, a candidate must earn a passing score on either the RICA Written Examination or Video Performance Assessment. An individual's performance on the RICA is evaluated against an established standard. The passing scores for the revised RICA Written Examination and revised RICA Video Performance Assessment were established by the CTC based on the professional judgments and recommendations of California educators with expertise and experience in reading instruction.

For the revised RICA Written Examination, first administered on August 8, 2009, the total test score is based on the number of raw score points earned on each section (multiple-choice section and constructed-response section), the weighting of each section, and the scaling of that score. Raw scores are converted to a scale of 100 to 300, with the scaled score of 220 representing the minimum passing score. A passing score must be achieved at a single test administration; performance on parts of the examination cannot be combined across administrations or with scores from the Video Performance Assessment.

For the revised RICA Video Performance Assessment, beginning with the November 13, 2009, submission deadline, the total test score is based on the number of raw score points earned on each of the candidate's three video packets. Raw scores are converted to a scale of 100 to 300, with the scaled score of 220 representing the minimum passing score. A passing score must be achieved based on the three video packets from a single submission deadline; video packet scores cannot be combined across different submission deadlines or with scores from the Written Examination.

Retaking the RICA

The RICA may be taken as often as necessary until a passing score is achieved on either the RICA Written Examination or the RICA Video Performance Assessment. If you attempt the Written Examination or the Video Performance Assessment and do not pass, you may either retake the assessment that you did not pass or take the other assessment. There is no limit to the number of times you may take either assessment; however, each time you wish to retake the RICA you must reregister.
